Choice 1: Philippians 1–4. Find Solutions in the Scriptures to Life’s Challenges

For each of the following common challenges, write the counsel from Philippians that you would use to resolve it:

  • People sometimes argue and complain over petty matters in church meetings or throughout the week (see Philippians 2:1–8, 14–15). If we followed the council in Philippians we would know that we need to be seeking to be as one heart and mind in Zion, putting away any murmurings, putting our neighbor before ourselves. My opinion, when people argue over small matters they are putting their own thoughts and feelings before those around them, and not seeking a Christ like attitude.

  • Many youth feel that their parents’ testimony is sufficient for them. Since they have good parents, they rely on them for all their spiritual strength (see Philippians 2:12–15 and institute student manual commentary for Philippians 2:12, “Work out Your Own Salvation with Fear and Trembling” [pp. 361–62]).

We know that we can only lean on others testimonies for a small time. We must seek out our own testimonies so that we can learn and prove our faith in Christ. We also know that in order to gain a testimony, we have to be willing to take a leap of faith, and DO. We show our faith and gain our testimony of Christ and the gospel by doing the the little things, reading our scriptures, praying, serving, No one can do that for us we have to do those things ourselves and put our faith to the test. Only then can we gain our own testimonies.

  • An investigator is considering joining the Church, but his family will no longer associate with him if he does (see Philippians 3:7–16; 4:13).

I love the scripture in Philippians 4:13 that says I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. We are all faced with difficult circumstances in our lives, but with each challenge we know that we have Christ on our side supporting us and strengthening us. We also know that to show complete faith in Christ we must truly be willing to give up all to know him, and we will be strengthened and blessed for giving up our 'things', lives and families to know him.

  • How is this writing assignment an example of the principle taught in 2 Nephi 32:3?

This assignment is like the priniciple taught in 2 Nephi 32:3 because we have to show our faith and understanding of the scriptures and of Christ's plan for us. He has given us the scriptures as a guide in our life and if we have the faith to open them up we can find answers, peace and understanding in them.
